5 new technologies at FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 Russia

VAR (Video Assisted Referee)

The idea is simple – referees can refer. As suggested by the name, there will be a video assistant referee in the VOR (Video Operation Room) who will help referees on the field to make decisions. The referee on the field can take help from the VOR while making decisions like goals, red cards, penalties, etc.

VAR (Video Assisted Referee)

The concept is that there will be a room which is a Video Operation Room (VOR). 33 broadcast camera feeds and 2 dedicated cameras will directly transmit the video to VOR. These devices are on the same network. There are 8 super slow motion feeds and 4 are ultra-slow motion. For the knockout games, there will be 2 more ultra-slow motion cameras.

The VOR has one main Video Assisted Referee and another three as an assistant. These referees keep on monitoring different camera feeds and inform the referee about the mistakes or any events when the referee asks for assistance.

4K UHD Video & VR

Fifa World cup 2018 will be broadcasted on 4K feed for the first time. The match will be available online via BBC Player. Also, BBC will be broadcasting the VR feed via BBC sports VR application.

Electronic performance and Tracking Systems (EPTS)

EPTS is the technology based on a tablet. This device will be supplied to the coach of all the participating teams. Every team will get three tablets which will be provided as per different requirement. One is used for analyst in the stand, another for an analyst on the bench and the last one for the medical team. This device gives stats of player like the positioning of player, speed, passing, tackles, etc.

Conclusion

Fifa World cup 2018 has been always implementing some new technology to make the tournament more precise. Use of VAR is the first time in the history of Fifa world cup. This can be a good pave for the future to empower sports with technology.
Previously, Fifa World cup has been using a goal-line technology. This has been very helpful to track the movement of the ball and take a decision either it’s a goal or not. It has 7 cameras for each goal post that will create a 3D image from the feeds of the camera. The referee has a smart wristwatch type of device that shows the message either it’s a goal or not.
